Illinois Great Rivers Conference retired pastor, the Rev. Alan Newhall, will be preaching the annual Prentice Sermon on Sunday, April 12, 9 a.m. at Bushnell UMC, 390 North Crafford, Bushnell, IL.
This service will focus on the life and times of Rev. Milton Lorenzo Haney. Rev.
Haney, an early Methodist circuit rider, raised a regiment in the Bushnell area at the start of the Civil War. He served as commanding officer of this regiment for several months, then became it's chaplain. At the battle of Atlanta, he provided combat leadership, for which he was awarded the congressional Medal of Honor.
The Prentice Sermon series began with a bequest from a Methodist layman in Springfield to honor a group of persons who are well known for their untiring proclamation of the Gospel, the pioneer Methodist circuit riding preachers.
Rev. Newhall is the chair of the IGRC Commission on Archives and History. He pastored the Bushnell UMC 1987-1992.
Anyone with an interest in Western Illinois and/or Civil War History will find this event both informative and inspirational.
The service is open to the public.
