
Charles Shelts 91, of Rushville, IL, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 17, 1935, to the late Leonard and Nettie Vance Shelts in Huntsville, Township, IL. Charlie went to Camden Grade School and graduated from Rushville High School Class of 1954.
He married Betty Diseron in December 1954. She survives along with (3) children, Steve Shelts (Peggy) of Winchester, IL, Jane Billingsley (Regie) of Macomb, IL and Scott Shelts of Littleton, IL; (5) grandchildren, Kristopher Billingsley (Kim), Lyndsay Bedwell (Spencer), Shelby, Brady, and Payton Shelts: (3) great grandchildren, Liam, Addison and Isabella; (2) step grandchildren, Krista Bangert (Jeff) and Tyler Willing (Lexi); (3) step great grandchildren, Gavin, Maddie and Bentley.
Charlie started working at the McCelland Standard service station in Rushville in 1954 then went to Amax Coal in 1977 until they closed in 1983, then worked at Vermont Mine for 6 years. After that, Charlie went to Southern Illinois to work underground coal mining for 13 years.
Charlie was a Deacon for the Rushville First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and a member of the Rushville Lions Club. He loved going to sales and Flea Markets. He also helped farm in the Spring and Fall.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 30, 2026, at 10:00 am at the Worthington Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Marzolf officiating. Interment will follow at the Rushville City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00pm to 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Rushville First Christian Church Disciples of Christ or the Rushville Lions Club.
