If you think your wedding day stress is high, imagine falling to your death and waking up in a surreal underworld just as the reception is getting started. This April, the Western Illinois University Department of Theatre and Dance invites audiences into a hauntingly beautiful reimagining of the classic Orpheus myth with Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice.”
Directed by Michael McNamara, the production takes over the Horrabin Hall Theatre for a limited run from April 2 to 5. The story follows Eurydice as she reunites with her long-lost father in the land of the dead.
As her earthly memories begin to fade into a blur, she is torn between the devoted husband fighting to bring her back and the comfort of the father she finally found again. It is a devastating meditation on the blueprints of love and memory— the kind of choice that echoes for eternity. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 2 to 4, with 2 p.m. matinees on April 4 and 5. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $17 for seniors (62 and older) and students under 18 and free for all WIU students, faculty and staff with a valid ID.
Tickets can be purchased online, at the WIU Box Office in the Hainline Lobby or by calling 309-298-2900.
