Virgil E. Schoonover

76, of Colchester,

Virgil E. Schoonover, age 76, of Colchester, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. He was born October 29, 1949, in Macomb, to Miles and Cora Henderson Schoonover. Virgil was united in marriage in June of 1968, to Barbara Jo Powell, she preceded him September 2, 1975. Virgil was then remarried to Lila Joanne Ferguson in May, of 1985.

Surviving to mourn Virgil’s passing is 2 sons: Anthony (Karen) Schoonover, Tennessee, Edwin Schoonover, Colchester, 1 daughter: Jessica Schoonover, Macomb, 1 grandson: Justice Harshbarger, 4 brothers: Stanley Schoonover, Colchester, Ronald Schoonover, Colchester, Russell Schoonover, Colchester, Terry (Joyce) Schoonover, Colchester, 3 sisters: Shelva Schoonover, Plymouth, Becky Schoonover, Kansas City, MO, and Connie (Jim) Valla, Canton.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara Schoonover, and 1 brother: Marvin Schoonover.

Virgil served his country in the United States Army, from 1969 to 1971 in Vietnam. Virgil had worked for many years at Central Stone. After retiring he then served as the road commissioner for Chalmers township. He was a member of the Macomb American Legion. Virgil enjoyed hunting and fishing, he also liked to have fish fries with his friends and family. He was spent many hours on his CB radio and his nickname was “Wildman”. He loved being outdoors whether it was mushroom hunting, fixing things or helping bail hay for the cattle, he just wanted to be outside. When he wasn’t outdoors he was watching Nascar or boxing. Most of all he cherished all the time spent with his grandson and his family.

A graveside service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Colchester with Rev. Jim Clayton. Military rites will be performed at the graveside by the Macomb V.F.W and the Macomb American Legion. Friends may view and sign the register book at Jones Mortuary in Colchester from 8:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Memorial is to the American Cancer Society.
