Reviewer’s Name: Carol Gardner Reviewer’s Occupation: Retired Book Title: Burn Book: A Tech Love Story Book’s Author: Kara Swisher The term burn book comes from the movie Mean Girls. It is a book that a person writes what she or he thinks about people with the intent that no one will ever see it. Kara is letting us see into her burn book. She starts off with her own life story explaining how she was raised, her education and how she ended up becoming a journalist. When writing for the New York Times she took an assignment to cover the tech industry and moved from Washington DC to San Francisco. There she spent 30 years covering tech giants like Gates, Jobs, Bezos, Zuckerberg and Musk and many more I didn’t know. They all went from working in a garage or a college dorm room and became billionaires. A few years ago, she moved back to Washington and is trying to warn those in Congress that there is a need to regulate these companies, the use of our data, and the use of the internet and the need for an Internet Bill of Rights.
She warns about AI and that it can be used for good like developing medical breakthroughs. Or it can be dangerous in the hands of bad people. No one knows for sure just how far or in what direction it will be taken. Sounds like a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it?
