By Darcie Shinberger The Macomb City Council is set to decide the future of the 85-year-old Glenwood Pool at its upcoming meeting. Structural evaluations have revealed significant deficiencies, prompting officials to reconsider the facility's viability. According to documents released ahead of the council meeting, inspection reports from TWM, Inc. and Klinger and Associates have raised alarms about the structural integrity of the pool. Inspection took place on February 12 and emphasized urgent repairs and the potential need for a complete overhaul of the facility. Given the findings, Public Works Director Alice Ohrtmann has recommended that the pool should not open for the summer of 2026. Instead, she advocates for a thorough discussion regarding long-term options, which may include renovations or the construction of a new facility. While there is an understanding of the community's fondness for the pool, safety concerns are paramount. The reports indicate that significant deterioration of various components of the elevated deck has left it in poor condition, with temporary stabilization measures expected to cost over $315,000. The overall expense of fully repairing the pool, including upgrading the pool house to meet ADA compliance standards, would be considerably higher. Klinger and Associates echoed these sentiments, categorizing the pool building as being in poor condition. Their assessment warns against continued occupancy until necessary repairs or replacements are made. They suggest that it may be more economic and efficient to overhaul the facility by constructing a new building that complies with current building codes and accessibility requirements. The council will also discuss maintaining the summer swim lesson program despite the pool's uncertain future. As the meeting approaches, residents await a decision that could significantly impact the community's recreational landscape.
