Mathis Appears on Sexual Assault Charges

Shaiking Mathis, 40, of Macomb appeared via Zoom from the McDonough County Jail in McDonough County Circuit Court on new charges he is facing stemming from a Sept. 4, 2024 incident in which he allegedly shot two police officers who were attempting to serve a warrant.

Mathis is accused of two counts of sexual assault by force for an incident that took place at his Normal Street residence in 2024. Later that day, he allegedly shot former Macomb Police Department Det. Nick Severs (who is now with the Illinois State Police) and MPD Sgt. J.P. McLaughlin as they were attempting to serve a search warrant in connection with the reported sexual assault. Mathis was arrested last week on the two new charges.

At Tuesday’s initial appearance, he asked for a court-appointed attorney. He returned to court Wednesday following the affidavit requesting a public defender for the latest charges. A public defender was appointed, and Mathis will appear for a preliminary hearing on the latest charges March 18.

In connection with the shooting incident, he is charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. Mathis has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. Following extensive negotiations and a 20-hour standoff with law enforcement, Mathis, of 309 N. Normal St., surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 5. He has remained detained in the local jail since that time. Mathis is being represented by Michael Jarard of Chicago on the shooting charges.
