A Macomb man who has been in custody since Sept. 5, 2024 after he allegedly shot two police officers who were attempting to serve a warrant will now appear Tuesday in McDonough County Circuit Court on two counts of criminal sexual assault by force.
Shaiking Mathis, 40, is accused of shooting former Macomb Police Department Det. Nick Severs (who is now with the Illinois State Police) and MPD Sgt. J.P. McLaughlin as they were attempting to serve a search warrant in connection with an alleged sexual assault that was reported to have taken place Sept. 4, 2024 at his Normal Street home in Macomb. Mathis was arrested Friday afternoon on a warrant on the two counts of sexual assault.
In connection with the shooting incident, he is charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. Mathis has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. At a recent status hearing, his case has been continued for 1:30 p.m., March 20 for pending motions. Following extensive negotiations and a 20-hour standoff with law enforcement, Mathis, of 309 N. Normal St., surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 5.
After Mathis' arrest in 2024, a search of the home was conducted and police found two firearms and several rounds of live ammunition. Mathis, who has been convicted of felonies in Kenosha, WI (2004) and Cook County (2010), is not allowed by law to possess firearms.
