The Macomb City Council voted last week to have TWM Engineering conduct a structural analysis of the Glenwood Park Swimming Pool.
Public Works Director Alice Ohrtmann told the council she has observed that the concrete under the pool is deteriorating. TWM will charge $13,400 for its examination.
“This will help us plan for the future,” Ohrtmann said. Alderman Dave Dorsett said, “I saw the underside of this pool in 1990 and it wasn’t good then.” He also said that he would not be in favor of any major spending on the pool.
Aldermen also voted to spend $150,000 to purchase the southern half of The Randolph House at 1 East Side Square. The city bought the northern half of the former hotel last fall. Alderman John Vigezzzi said restoration of the hotel would help the downtown. Dorsett noted that Abraham Lincoln was a hotel guest on two occasions. Mayor Mike Inman said hotel improvements are part of an overall plan for improving the downtown.
The mayor also announced that a $1 million federal earmark has been approved for the city. He said it would go toward replacement of lead in city sewer lines. The City Council also voted to authorize application for a $5,000 Walmart Spark Grant. City grant writer Jessica Biddenstadt said the money would be used to buy electronic tablets for the Macomb Transportation Department. She said the city previously received $3,000 for work on windows at the Macomb Police Department.
Aldermen also voted concurrence with the mayor’s appointments of Tim Howe and Ross Braun to the Macomb Tree Board.
