Reviewer’s Name: Michael Wallick Reviewer’s Occupation: Retired Book Title: The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy Book’s Author: James Patterson and Vicky Ward In the Fall of 2022, Maddie Mogen, a senior marketing major at the University of Idaho, was working at the Mad Greek, a vegan restaurant in Moscow. She noticed an unusual-looking man, pale, thin, with bulging eyes, seeking her attention. He ordered a vegan pizza to go. He asked her if she would like to go out. She declined. Little did Maddie know, she had just come face-to-face with her killer, Bryan Kohberger, a Ph.D. candidate in criminology at Washington State University at Pullman. On the morning of November 13, 2022, Kohberger stabbed to death Maddie and three of her friends, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, and Ethan Chapin, at an off-campus residence. They would become known as the Idaho Four. The Idaho Four: an American Tragedy by James Patterson and Vicky Ward is an account of the crime, investigation, and hunt for the killer. One hundred thirty law enforcement officers at the local, state, and federal levels worked on the case. The authors avoided sensationalizing the story with lurid pictures of the crime scene and treated the victims, their families, and the Moscow and university communities, with respect. Written in a simple style, The Idaho Four is an interesting and easy read.
