Home may be where the heart is, but for the Macomb High girls basketball team, the road has not been all bad either.
The Bombers improved to 7-1 in road contests Saturday, defeating South Fulton 58-18 at VIT High School.
Macomb improved to 14-9 overall, 3-1 in Prairieland South Division play.
South Fulton slipped to 4-14 overall, 0-2 in league play.
“It was a nice road win, “ said MHS coach Justin Elbe. “That’s tough to do no matter who you are playing. We’re proud of that.”
The Bombers hopped on a bus on the cold, snowy day entering a chilly gym, but quickly warmed to the task at hand.
“The girls are so toughminded, that’s what I love about coaching them,” said Elbe. “They’re tough and they don’t let the little things bother them.”
Macomb grabbed control in the opening eight minutes buoyed by its seniors.
Jordan Hines scored eight points, Sophie Wilson added four points and Dakota Thorman a 3-pointer as the Bombers flew out to an 18-6 lead.
The second period saw Wilson score eight points, while Brooklyn Lyles added a traditional three-point play.
Meanwhile, the Bomber defense allowed just one basket and four points in all. That helped the visitors fly into halftime with a 29-10 advantage.
“We came out and executed a lot of really good plays, the stuff we’ve been working on,” said Elbe.
Macomb had its best offensive output in the third period as Hines, Wilson and Aubrey Holthaus combined for 19 of the team’s 22 points.
Defensively, MHS held South Fulton to six points as the visitors built a 51-16 lead heading into the final frame.
Macomb had nine players score, led by Wilson and Hines with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Holthaus was next with nine points, followed by Lyles with five. Reese Watson and Thorman each added three points.
Taylor Mann and Destiny Monroe chipped in two points each and Kinley Sloan a free throw for the victors.
“It was a good win,” said Elbe. “We played hard the whole time we were out there.”
“The things we’re working on, we’re getting better,” he added. “That’s promising.”
Kynley Mitchell topped South Fulton with six points, while Preslea Parker added four for the Rebels.
Annie Kessler, Emma Gorsuch, Dixie Chenoweth and Janaysha Markley tallied two points apiece for the hosts.
The JV contest saw Macomb improve to 13-1 on the season with a 52-37 victory.
The Bombers led 17-12 after the opening quarter and 27-19 at halftime.
MHS upped its advantage to 44-30 entering the last period.
Lyles topped MHS with 19 points, 11 in the opening half.
Mann and Grace O’Hern also reached double figures for the Bombers, adding 13 and 11 points respectively.
Sloan added seven and Olyvia Clark two for MHS.
Kessler and Ella Dutton topped South Fulton with 15 and 11 points respectively.
Alaina Dutton added eight points and Jada Jones three for the Rebels.
The Macomb High varsity was slated to return to action Monday, hosting Farmington. On Thursday, the Bombers are scheduled to host Mendon Unity.
