Reviewer’s Name: Steven Rock Reviewer’s Occupation: Retired Book Title: The Gales of November Book’s Author: John U. Bacon Gordon Lightfoot sang: “The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee.

The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy.” The author has taken a deep dive into the story of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior in November 1975. The ship was taking taconite pellets used to make steel from Minnesota to places like Cleveland and Toledo. The experienced captain was on his last voyage before the end of the shipping season and a planned retirement. When the ship was built in 1958, it was the largest and fastest on the Great Lakes. You will learn about the different roles on the ship and the story of the 29 sailors who perished. It is a gripping narrative about what went wrong and even though the ending is known, it is still a moving and fascinating story.
