MHS Girls Tame Wildcats, Conquer Titans

The Macomb High girls basketball team started a new week on a winning note Monday evening, defeating North Fulton 53-20 at Spoon River Valley H.S.

The Bombers dominated from the get-go, flying out to a 16-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.

All five Macomb starters scored on offense, while the defense held North Fulton to a Harleigh Waughtel free throw, forcing 12 turnovers and eight missed shots.

MHS added on to its lead in the second period, outscoring the hosts 11-8 in building a 27-9 halftime advantage.

North Fulton managed just one basket in the initial 16 minutes. That came from Waughtel with 1:48 left before intermission.

Macomb put together its best offensive quarter in the third frame, scoring 23 points.

Jordan Hines was a catalyst, scoring 10 points as the Bombers led 50-17 heading into the last stanza.

Hines and Sophie Wilson topped the Bombers with 16 and 11 points respectively.

Aubrey Holthaus added eight points, while Dakota Thorman, Reese Watson and Brooklyn Lyles all chipped six points apiece for MHS.

Waughtel topped North Fulton (5-11) with eight points.

The Bombers returned to action Wednesday, heading to “The Shoebox” in Monmouth to face Monmouth-Roseville in non-conference play.

Macomb was dominant in recording a 55-16 victory.

The visitors raced out to a 15-0 lead in the opening four minutes as Watson scored seven points, while Wilson added a pair of 3-pointers and Hines a basket.

A pair of free throws by Naylani Santos finally broke the scoring ice for the Titans at the 2:10 mark. Lilly Mahoney scored the first basket for MRHS with 1:11 left in the period.

But the Bombers glided into the second frame with a 27-4 advantage.

The Macomb lead was 37-9 at halftime and 53-10 entering the final eight minutes.

Wilson paced the Bombers with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.

Hines and Holthaus added 13 points each, while Watson finished with nine.

Brooklyn Lyles and Grace O’Hern chipped in two points apiece.

Mahoney topped Monmouth- Roseville (5-13) with four points.

Meanwhile, the Macomb JV squad improved to 11-1 on the season by earning a 50–36 win over the JV Titans.

Kinley Sloan and Lyles topped the Bombers with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Taylor Mann was next with nine points, followed by O’Hern with eight and Watson with six.

Josie Elbe and Olyvia Clark added two points each.

On Tuesday, the JV squad headed to Carthage for a pair of contests, recording two wins.

The Bombers defeated Lewistown 37–30 with Watson scoring a team-leading 17 points.

O’Hern was next with eight points, followed by Solan and Lyles with four points each.

Elbe and Cece Jones chipped in two points apiece.

The Bombers followed with a 42-21 victory over Illini West, who defeated MHS earlier in the season.

Watson topped the Bombers with 25 points.

Lyles followed with nine points, while Mann and Sloan added four points each.

MHS (11-8) was back in action Thursday, hosting Liberty (15-3) in non-conference play at Washington Street Gym.

The eagles entered the contest ranked No. 8 in Class 1A by the Associated Press.

On Monday, the Bombers head to Carthage to face Mendon Unity (9-11) in the opening game of the Jerry Logan Shootout.
