Cyclone Varsity Win Streak Now 10; JV Still Unbeaten

The West Prairie High School boys basketball teams just keep winning.

The squads headed to Edgington Tuesday for non-conference contests against host Rockridge.

The varsity Cyclones notched their 10th straight victory, improving to 15-4 on the season in posting a 64-57 victory over the Rockets.

Braden Coplan scored eight points in the first period, while three other starters combined for 10 points as the Cyclones breezed out to an 18-10 lead.

A Coplan basket pushed the West Prairie lead to 27-14 with 5:40 remaining before halftime.

But the Rockets responded with a 10-2 during the next four and a half minutes. And when Wade Richhart scored with 1:10 to go before the break, the Rockets found themselves within five at 29-24.

The Cyclones took a 33-26 lead into the intermission before seizing control in the second half.

A 3-pointer from Lukas McKay at the 6:41 mark of the third quarter brought Rockridge within 35-32.

But West Prairie dominated thereafter, outscoring the Rockets 17-5 in building a 52-37 advantage.

Braden Coplan was a menace on both ends of the floor for the visitors, converting steals into layups as he scored 14 points in the period.

West Prairie took its biggest lead of the contest on a Matt Whitman basket with 7:08 left that gave the Cyclones a 56-37 advantage.

Rockridge got no closer than the final score.

Braden Coplan finished with 32 points, including six 3-pointers. He also added seven assists and five steals and two rebounds.

Ryan Clark added 11 points and two rebounds, while Eli DeCounter recorded nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

Holden Coplan had six points, six assists, three steals and two rebounds, while Whitman scored four points and grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.

Gannon Shipman chipped in two points and four rebounds for the victors.

Richhart topped Rockridge (3-10) with 23 points, 10 in the fourth quarter.

McKay added 14 points, including four 3-pointers for the Rockets.

The JV contest saw West Prairie rally from an early deficit to notch a 29-26 victory, upping its record to 14-0.

The game was played with seven minute quarters.

The Rockets flew out to a 15-9 lead after the opening period. But the Cyclones held the host scoreless in the second frame, heading into halftime with a 17-15 lead.

The Cyclones held a 27-23 edge heading into the final stages.

The two teams combined to score just five points in the last seven minutes.

Shipman and Mason Whitman topped West Prairie with eight points each.

Tyson Carnes added five points, while Ayden Lacey and Cam Melvin added four points apiece for the Cyclones.

Wyatt Ryan and Levi Hoover paced Rockridge with seven and five points respectively.

The Cyclones return to action Friday, making the trip to Toulon to face Stark County (3-8).

West Prairie will then have a quick turnaround as it welcomes in Griggsville-Perry (7-7) for action Saturday afternoon.
