The Macomb High sophomore boys basketball squad had a busy week on the court, playing four games, finishing with two wins and two losses.
On Tuesday, the Bombers were edged by Mercer County 37-35 at Aledo.
The Golden Eagles led 8-6 after the opening quarter and 17-16 at halftime.
Macomb trailed 27-25 entering the final period of play.
Corey Robinson topped MHS with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
Cameron Keene added nine points, followed by Kollin Knupp with five points. Levi Helling chipped in five and Carter Van Vleet two for the Bombers.
On Friday, the Bombers played at Beardstown posting a 41-26 victory.
It was a slow start for the visitors, who trailed 4-2 after the first period. But they outscored the Tigers 14-6 in the second quarter to grab a 16-10 halftime lead.
The Bombers continued to pull away in the final 16 minutes, upping their lead to 28-17 entering the last frame.
Robinson topped MHS with 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
Demetri Doyle added nine points, followed by Arlo Hill with eight.
Keene and Knupp chipped in five and two points respectively for the victors.
The team jumped back into action Saturday, heading to Quincy for games against Quincy High and Quincy Notre Dame.
Macomb grabbed an early lead and held off a late QHS rally in defeating the Blue Devils 48-43.
MHS led 16-5 after the opening period and 25-14 at the half.
The Macomb lead was 33-22 entering the final minutes. The Bombers hung on down the stretch, making 11-of-16 free throw attempts in securing the win.
Robinson topped MHS with 16 points, while Keene and Helling added 13 points each for the Bombers.
Knupp and Hill chipped in three points apiece to close out the Bomber scoring.
Macomb finished the day with a split as it lost to QND 45-29.
The Raiders seized a 16-6 lead after one quarter on the way to racing to a 31-8 halftime advantage.
The Bombers trailed 34-19 entering the last period.
Keene and Robinson topped MHS with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Helling and Hill added three points each and Knupp a free throw for the Bombers.
Before the holidays, back on Dec. 22, the Macomb sophomores headed to Abingdon for games against Rock Island Alleman, Farmington and host A-Town.
MHS finished the day winning two of its three games.
The Bombers started their day with a 46-26 win over Alleman.
Macomb outscored the Pioneers in each quarter leading 14-11 after the initial stanza before building a 26-15 advantage at intermission.
MHS increased its lead to 38-22 entering the final frame.
Luke Chapla topped the Bombers with 16 points, 10 in the opening half.
Keene added 11 points, all in the opening half, while Knupp, Helling and Robinson chipped in five points apiece.
Van Vleet and Jayden Lindsey rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The next contest saw the Bombers rally in the final quarters for a 25-23 win against Farmington.
MHS trailed 9-2 after the initial period and 17-11 at the half. The deficit was 21-18 entering the final minutes before the Bombers outscored the Farmers 7-2 in completing the comeback.
Chapla topped Macomb with 10 points, followed by Robinson with five and Keene with four.
Knupp, Van Vleet and Helling chipped in two points apiece.
The final game of the day for Macomb saw the visiting Bombers fall short to the host Tornadoes, dropping a 30-27 decision.
A-Town led 10-7 after the opening frame and 20-15 at the break.
MHS narrowed the gap, closing within 25-23 entering the final stanza. But the Tornadoes outscored the Bombers 5-4 to hang on for the win.
Chapla topped Macomb with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
Robinson added seven points, including a pair of 3s, followed by Keene with five and Helling with three.
The MHS sophomores are now 7-6 on the season.
