WP/SE Splits Final Two Games At Lady Tiger Classic

The West Prairie/Southeastern high school girls basketball team split its final two games at the 43rd annual Lady Tiger Classic that concluded play Tuesday in Beardstown.

On Monday afternoon, the Cyclones grabbed an early lead and maintained the upperhand thereafter in notching a 33-25 victory over Pittsfield.

WP/SE wrapped up play Tuesday, losing to Triopia/ Meredosia-Chambersburg/ Virginia 48-37 to finish tournament play with a 2-3 record.

Against Pittsfield, the Cyclones eased out to a 12-5 lead in the opening eight minutes as Alivia Barkley scored five points.

The Saukees used a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw in the second frame in outscoring WP/SE 7-6 to inch within 18-12 at the half.

But the Cyclones doubled their lead in the third period, outscoring Pittsfield 9-3 in building a 27-15 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Barkley topped WP/SE with nine points, all coming in the first half. She also added four rebounds.

Kara Stephens added eight points, two assists and a team-leading 10 rebounds for the Cyclones.

Madelynn Sullivan and Payton McGrew scored seven points each. McGrew had nine rebounds, while Sullivan recorded three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Emily Martin added a fourth quarter basket for two points. She also had two rebounds.

Sophie Gengler topped Pittsfield (2-13) with 12 points, eight coming in the final quarter.

On Tuesday against the Trojans, the Cyclones rallied from an early deficit, only to fall short at the end.

WP/SE trailed 11-7 after the opening period with Triopia building its lead to 22-13 at intermission.

The Cyclones managed just four baskets in the opening 16 minutes of play.

WP/SE rallied in the third stanza as Sullivan and Stephens combined for 10 points. The Cyclones outscored the Trojans 15-9, drawing within 31-28 as the fourth quarter arrived.

Unfortunately for the Cyclones, Triopia responded with its best offensive period of the contest, outscoring WP/SE 17-9 to maintain control down the stretch.

Sullivan topped WP/SE with 16 points, including four treys. Stephens also reached double figures, scoring 13 points, along with adding six rebounds and three assists.

Barkley added five points and two assists, while McGrew chipped in three points and two rebounds.

Martin recorded three rebounds and two assists.

Mallory Rohn and Gabby Myers topped Triopia (9-5) with 10 points each.

West Prairie/Southeastern is now 8-8 on the season.

The Cyclones head to Mt. Sterling Saturday to face Pittsfield in the seventh place game of the Lady Hornet Classic.

The game was originally scheduled to be played Nov. 29, but postponed by wintry weather.

Next week, the Cyclones have home games scheduled with Biggsville West Central on Jan. 6 (varsity only) and ROWVA/Williamsfield on Jan. 8.

Both contests are scheduled to be played in the South Elementary School gym.
