Cyclone Girls Wrap Up Tourney Play With Victory

The West Prairie/Southeastern girls basketball team edged Ridgewood 37-34 on Dec. 18 in wrapping up play at the United Holiday Tournament.

Both teams saw their respective records move to 5-5 on the season.

Trailing 9-4 early in the second period, the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run in taking the lead.

WP/SE held a slim 14-13 advantage at halftime. The Cyclones posted an 11-7 advantage in the third frame, building a 25-20 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Payton McGrew recorded a team-leading 13 points and six rebounds for WP/SE.

Alyvia Barkley added 10 points, followed by Madelynn Sullivan with seven points.

Ashlynn Kelley scored three points and Josie Hodges and Emily Martin chipped in two points apiece for the Cyclones.

Kelley handed out three assists and added two rebounds, while Sullivan also had two rebounds for the victors.

West Prairie/Southeastern had one final game scheduled before the holidays Monday, playing at Galva (2-8) in non-conference play.

The contest was originally scheduled for Dec. 11, but was postponed by weather.

The Cyclones will then return to action Dec. 26 in the Lady Tiger Classic at Beardstown.

West Prairie/Southeastern, the No. 17 seed, will face No. 16 seed Staunton at 5 p.m. The victor will play top-seeded Brown County at 8 p.m. while the loser drops into the play-in loser’s bracket that begins action Saturday.
