Pet Tails: Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe & Sound Part 3
Holiday plants, lights, candles, and other decorations can make the holidays festive, but they can also be risky for our pets. These tips from the American Veterinary Medicine Association can help keep the festivities festive.
• Breakable ornaments can cause injuries, and swallowed ornaments can cause intestinal blockage or illness. Keep any ornaments, including those made from saltbased dough or other food-based materials, out of reach of pets.
• Tinsel, ribbons, wreaths, and other decorative materials can cause choking or intestinal blockage when eaten.
• Christmas trees can tip over if pets climb on them or try to play with the lights and ornaments (consider securing your tree to the wall or ceiling), and water additives for live Christmas trees can be hazardous.
• Electric lights can cause burns if a curious pet chews the electrical cords.
• Poinsettias, amaryllis, mistletoe, balsam, pine, cedar, and holly are among the common holiday plants that can be dangerous and even poisonous to pets who eat them.
Adopt, don’t shop. For more information on how you can adopt your furever friend, volunteer at the shelter or to be considered as a foster, reach out to the Humane Society of McDonough County, and follow them on Facebook at facebook. com/HSMCIL.
