Playing in its home opener at Washington Street Gym Monday evening, the Macomb High girls basketball team saw turnovers and cold shooting prove to be the difference in a 48-45 loss.
MHS dropped to 6-4 with the loss, while Sherrard improved to 4-2.
The Bombers committed 19 turnovers, while also finishing 15-of-50 shooting (30 percent).
Macomb trailed 10-6 after the opening eight minutes, as it managed just two baskets, three-pointers by Sophie Wilson and Aubrey Holthaus.
Wilson added nine of her team’s 14 points in the second quarter as the Bombers entered halftime trailing 21-20.
The game remained tight in the second half as Sherrard led 33-30 heading into the final stanza.
The Tigers hung on in the final minutes as Adalynn Elsbury scored nine of her team’s 15 points. Grace Bohnert also added four points in helping Sherrard escape with the road victory.
Wilson topped the Bombers with 20 points. Holthaus also reached double figures, adding 13, while Jordan Hines scored eight points.
Dakota Thorman and Reese Watson chipped in two points apiece for MHS.
Bohnert and Elsbury topped Sherrard with 16 and 10 points respectively.
Teagan Nelson added nine points, all coming in the middle two periods.
MHS finished 10-of-15 from the free throw line, compared to 9-of-16 for Sherrard.
The JV contest saw the Bombers glide past the Tigers 58-26.
Macomb led 16-10 after the opening period and steadily pulled away thereafter.
MHS led 29-16 at halftime and 45-21 entering the final frame.
Eight players scored for the Bombers with Watson and Grace O’Hern leading the way with 16 and 10 points respectively.
Olyvia Clark added eight, all in the fourth quarter, followed by Brookly Lyles with seven, Kinley Sloan with six, Taylor Mann with five, Ella McKee with four and Josie Elbe with two.
The Bombers were scheduled to host West Hancock Thursday in its final game before the holidays.
