Surrendering 65 points in a loss to Quincy Notre Dame in its last contest, the Macomb High varsity boys basketball team got back to basics Tuesday against Farmington.
The Bombers held the Farmers to single digit scoring in each of the first three quarters on the way to notching a 47-35 Prairieland Conference crossover victory at The Farm.
Macomb improved to 6-2 on the season, while Farmington slipped to 1-5.
“We had a really solid team defensive effort,” said MHS coach Jeremy Anderson. “We did a good job of limiting them to one shot a possession.”
The Bombers edged their way out to a 10-9 lead following the opening eight minutes. Carter Havens scored four points for MHS, while Farmington’s Boston Smith scored five points, including a 3-pointer, for the Farmers.
Macomb scored 15 points in the second period as Nolan Hoge scored five points on the inside, while Drew Watson and Kellen Martin sank 3-pointers.
Meanwhile, Farmington had just four baskets and nine points total for the second straight quarter. That left the Farmers trailing the Bombers 25-18 at halftime.
Macomb continued to build upon its advantage in the second half.
MHS outscored Farmington 12-5 in the third frame led by Hoge’s six points. That allowed the visitors to build a 37-23 lead heading into the final stanza.
Hoge topped Macomb with 15 points, 11 in the middle quarters, while Nick Elbe added eight points, all in the second half.
“Our interior guys, Hoge and Elbe had good games offensively,” said Anderson.
Havens added six points for the Bombers, followed by Watson and Martin with five points each.
Cooper Hobson tallied four points, while Isaac Leinbach and Drake May chipped in two points apiece for MHS.
Jack Gronewold topped Farmington with 10 points, while Logan Gardner added eight for the Farmers.
The sophomore contest saw the Bombers complete the sweep, posting a 40-29 victory.
Macomb trailed 12-9 after the opening period, but outscored the Farmers 13-2 in the second frame in grabbing a 22-14 halftime lead.
The Bombers doubled their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 16-8, upping their advantage to 38-22 heading into the final stanza.
Luke Chapla and Corey Robinson topped Macomb with 15 and 11 points respectively.
Cameron Keene and Carter Van Vleet added six points each, while Collin Knupp chipped in two points for the Bombers.
The Macomb High sophomores are scheduled to head to Camp Point Central Saturday for games against the host Panthers at 9 a.m. and Rushville-Industry at 10:15 a.m.
Both the sophomore and varsity teams return to action Dec. 16 as they welcome West Hancock to The Hangar for a pair of games beginning at 5:30 p.m.
