Reviewer’s Name: Jamie Lane Reviewer’s Occupation: Nurse Book Title: The Weight of Ink Book’s Author: Rachel Kadish This book was released in 2018 and won a national Jewish book award. The story starts in the early 21st century when a London couple found a stash of documents sealed under their staircase. Since they were written in Hebrew, they consulted Helen Watt, a Hebrew scholar, who discovered that the documents dated back to the 1660s and contained very valuable letters between Jewish rabbis and scholars discussing nuances in Jewish theology of the time. She senses that the scribe for a blind rabbi is a rebel and struggles to learn everything she can about this person’s beliefs and life. This book gives you a firsthand sense of what a challenge life was for Jews in London at this time, and how the Black Plague wreaked havoc on everyone’s lives.
