A few weeks earlier, the Macomb High and Geneseo football squads did battle on the gridiron with the Maple Leafs downing the Bombers 29-0.
On Tuesday evening, action moved to the basketball court.
In a game that included 50 fouls and 67 free throws, it was the visiting Bombers who prevailed 63-52.
The win proved to be a milestone victory for MHS coach Jeremy Anderson.
It was his 226th victory as Bomber coach, moving him to the top of the list, making him the all-time winningest coach in Bomber basketball history, dating back to 1920.
Anderson’s record after Tuesday's win at MHS improved to 226-140. He passed Bill Herde, who compiled a 225–118 mark from 1952–1968.
The varsity contest saw the Bombers fly out to a 19-7 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Carter Havens provided an early offensive spark for the Bombers, scoring seven points.
The second period saw Geneseo’s Jack Kreiss score eight of his team’s 13 points as the Maple Leafs inched within 31-20 at halftime.
The lead for Macomb could have been larger, but the Bombers were just 3-of-12 from the free row line in the initial 16 minutes.
Kreiss took over for Geneseo in the third period, scoring 15 of the Maple Leafs’ 22 points.
But MHS received scoring from six different players in maintaining a 48-42 advantage heading into the final frame.
The last eight minutes saw each score just two baskets.
MHS attempted 23 free throws in the fourth quarter, making just 10. But that ended up being enough as the Bombers notched the victory.
Macomb had three players finish in double figures, led by Nolan Hoge’s 17.
Havens added 13 and Drew Watson 12 for the Bombers.
Nick Elbe and Kelln Martin added eight points each. Isaac Leinbach, Cooper Hobson and Drake May chipped in two points apiece, while Hayden Katz added a free throw.
For the game, MHS finished 18-of-46 (39.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Kreiss topped Geneseo (1-2) with 27 points, all coming in the final three quarters.
The sophomore contest saw Macomb drop a 45-31 decision to the hosts.
Geneseo led 13-5 after the opening period and 19-10 at halftime.
The Bombers closed within 29-24 entering the final stanza, but were outscored by the Maple Leafs 16-7.
Luke Chapla topped Macomb with 13 points.
Corey Robinson was next with nine points, followed by Cameron Keene with five.
Arlo Hill and Carter Van Fleet rounded out the Macomb scoring with two points each.
Dylan Haser topped Geneseo with 18 points.
