Bombers Edge Cyclones; B-PC Falls In Night Two Of Classic

Macomb High and Abingdon-Avon improved to 2-0, while Illini West notched its first victory during the second night of action at the Spartan Tip-Off Classic in Bushnell.

The Bombers opened the evening with a 56-49 win over West Prairie before A-Town defeated Illini Bluffs 63-47.

The final game Monday evening saw Illini West defeat host Bushnell-Prairie City 53-22.

The opening contest of the night had added weight to it as it also counted as a Prairieland Conference South Division contest.

Macomb flew out to an 18-9 lead after the opening eight minutes as senior guard Drew Watson scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Carter Havens added a pair of baskets and Nolan Hoge three free throws for the Bombers in the initial frame.

Macomb recorded just two baskets in the second period and scored just nine points. That allowed the Cyclones to narrow the gap as Eli DeCounter scored four of West Prairie’s 11 points.

That left West Prairie trailing 27-20 at halftime.

The Bombers maintained the upperhand in the final 16 minutes.

Both teams scored 15 points in the third period, leaving the Cyclones facing a 42-35 deficit heading into the final stanza.

Hoge scored six of Macomb’s 14 points in the final quarter, while Braden Coplan scored five of West Prairie’s 14 points.

Watson topped Macomb with 21 points, 13 in the opening half. That included 5-of-10 from the free throw line.

Havens added 14 points, eight in the opening half, while Hoge added 11 points, eight in the second half.

Cooper Hobson added four points for MHS, followed by Nick Elbe with three, Kellen Martin with two and Drake May with one.

Braden Coplan topped West Prairie with 16 points, 10 in the second half.

Matt Whitman was next with seven points, followed by DeCounter, Gannon Shipman and Holden Coplan with six points apiece.

Brody Cordell and Ryan Clark closed out the West Prairie scoring with four points each.

The evening’s finale saw the visiting Chargers control the final three quarters in pulling away for the victory.

B-PC scored four baskets in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers as the Spartans and Chargers were knotted at 11-11.

The two teams combined for just three baskets in the second period. But Illini West also sank five of its eight free throw attempts in outscoring B-PC 9-3 in the frame to take a 20-14 halftime advantage.

The Spartan offense struggled in the second half, scoring just eight points, all on free throws.

Meanwhile, Wesley Robertson scored 11 of Illini West’s 17 points as the Chargers built a 37-18 advantage heading into the final period.

Braylon Griffitts topped B-PC with 12 points, including a pair of treys and 6-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.

Cam Shinn also recorded a pair of threes to finish with six points, while De’Arion Ruffin-Thomas and Connor Plan rounded out the Spartan scoring with two points each.

Robertson led Illini West with 17 points.

Eli Bisby added 11 points, while Cash Jones had nine for the Chargers.

The second game of the evening saw the Tornadoes use a strong second quarter, outscoring IB 22-7 on the way to building a 40-20 halftime lead.

Kolbe Hightower topped A-Town with 15 points, 12 in the first half, while Ryker Darst added 12 for Tornadoes, 10 in the opening half.

Griffin White led Illini Bluffs with 13 points, 11 in the first half.

Will Emhoff and Justus Dugger added eight points apiece for the Tigers.
