Nothing captures the spirit of the winter holiday season better than the gentle hums of song and the fervency of community. On Monday, December 15, the McDonough Choral Society warmly invites everyone seeking the magic and spirit of the holidays to join their festive winter concert at 7:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church (1212 West Calhoun Street) in Macomb. This special evening promises not only beautiful music but also the chance to share in the joy, hope, and togetherness that make the holidays truly unforgettable.

To offer the community a joyful escape from daily stresses, this year’s holiday concert will feature Dr. John Orfe, the new Music Director of the McDonough Choral Society. Similar to the timeless message of “A Christmas Carol,” the program will honor those who paved the way—including Susan Shoemaker, co-founder of MCS in 2002, and her late husband, John—who, through their vision and dedication, made this tradition possible.

The choir and instrumental ensemble will unite to perform arrangements, including “The Word Was God“ (by Rosephanye Powell), “Cantique de Jean Racine” (by Gabriel Fauré), “My Song in the Night” (arranged by Mack Wilberg), “Mary Had a Baby” (arranged by Roland Carter), “Jul, Jul” (by Chris de Silva), “I Will Light Candles This Christmas” (by Kim André Arnesen) and “Lauda per la Natività del Signore (Lauds for the Nativity of Our Lord)” (by Ottorino Respighi). The Choral Society asks all attendees to join them in the final piece of the evening, “Festival First Nowell” (arranged by Dan Forrest), as a final send-off to celebrate the end of 2025 and to welcome the new beginnings of 2026. Refreshments will be offered after the show.

Of course, many people are concerned about their spending during this holiday season. This winter wonderland of music is requesting donations since it will be a no-ticket event. While many celebrate with cheer, hope, kindness, presents and hospitality, the MCS seems to want to remind everyone that although these qualities reflect what December means to many, for some, it wouldn’t exist without the arrival of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. And through the gift of song, the McDonough Choral Society hopes to incorporate that spiritual message.
