Macomb Woman Helping Make Holidays Brighter Following An Alternative Tradition

We've heard of St. Nicholas, Santa, Father Christmas, Papa Noel … but what about the Christmas Witch?

Following folklore and 'alternative traditions,' Kelley Martin, owner of the online custom craft and eclectic shop, Thirteen Broomsticks, is bringing the 'Christmas Witch' to Macomb to help area families in need during the holidays. Martin follows Wiccan and Pagan traditions, which are to help and serve others.

'During the traditional Yuletide season dating back before Christianity Christmas, there are several legends surrounding Christmas week, which includes the Christmas Witch, who appears in several different European-based folklore,' Martin explained. 'In Italy, for example, she is known as Santa's twin sister. I was trying to think of a way to help members of our community this holiday season, so I drew on what I believe in and practice.'

Martin is seeking sponsors to provide assistance to families who might need a little extra boost. She currently has seven individuals (three families) signed up in need of sponsors/donors; however, her goal is to help at least one dozen families or more, as 'kindness and generosity allows.' To donate, Martin has compiled a shopping list, which she can provide via Facebook Messenger at 13 Broomsticks.

She also has put together an Amazon wish list at tinyurl. com/MartinCWlist. The items will be shipped to her home, where she will wrap each item for delivery on the evening of Dec. 24.

'In my spirituality, giving back completes the circle of life. Before losing my brick-and-mortar storefront location last year, I made a promise to my community that I would give back in any way that I could. Just because I lost my store front doesn't mean I've lost my compassion or my mission to give back,' Martin shared. 'This is just another way that members of our community can join together to be support one another. There are so many people who need help and hope, especially this holiday season.'

In addition to toys and traditional gifts, Martin is also collecting hygiene and household items, and plans to purchase Christmas trees for the families after Thanksgiving if funds allow. Individuals can drop off their unwrapped gifts at Sullivan Taylor Uptown or message her through the 13 Broomsticks Facebook page. Martin can also be reached at (217) 506-1530.
