The Bushnell-Prairie City High School girls basketball team opened its season this week, splitting a pair of games in pool play at the RW/Ridgewood Girls Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament.
On Monday at Oneida, the Spartans dropped a 44-9 decision against Mercer County.
The Golden Eagles flew out to a 12-0 lead after the opening period before building a 29-0 halftime advantage.
Mercer County led 35-6 entering the final eight minutes.
Justice Klinedinst scored six points, while Kendyl McCleery added three for the Spartans.
Shadia Williams led Mercer County with 22 points, 20 in the first half. Whitney Collison added 11 for the victors.
On Tuesday at Williamsfield, the Spartans wrapped up pool play, posting a 36-33 victory over West Central.
B-PC jumped out a 13-1 lead after the first frame. But West Central responded, outscoring the Spartans 16-5 in the second stanza to close within 18-17 at halftime.
McCleery scored eight of B-PC’s 10 points in the third quarter. That helped up the Spartan lead to 28-23 entering the final eight minutes.
B-PC hung on for the win, despite shooting just 2-of-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
For the game, B-PC shot 7-of-26 from the line.
McCleery topped the Spartans with 15 points, despite making just 1-of-8 free throws.
Jersey Jones and Klinedinst added five points each, followed by Jules Kreps with four.
Mylee Chenoweth added three points, while Alissa Griffitts and Scarlett Countryman rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
Reegan Shafer topped West Central with 13 points, while Evelyn Goebel added seven points for the Heat.
B-PC will close out tournament play with a pair of crossover contests, one scheduled for Friday and one Saturday.
Both games will be played at the ROWVA schools in Oneida.
