LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Intolerable Acts and King George III

I saw Ken Burns’ The American Revolution” last night and caught a meaningful term. In 1775 the colonists decided they would no longer tolerate the “intolerable acts” of King George III. The King then declared the American colonies to be in a state of 'open and avowed rebellion' with the “Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition.” Today we have made the same decision as the colonists. Our rallies and protests are essential. It’s important to keep contacting legislators who support those intolerable acts. We need to let them know how we feel. It’s also important to keep contacting legislators who support our ideals to help them work for us. I pick one intolerable act each week and call or email a bunch of legislators.

Kudos to all who are participating in any of the eight monthly Rallies in Macomb. Thank you to Indivisible and friends who rally at 3:30 to 5:30pm on Thursdays and to the McDonough County Democratic Central Party for the Saturday noon rallies.

Huge thanks to all who are donating food and cash to food pantries. Look for “little food pantries” placed around town to make additional donations. Food insecurity should not be a concern in the USA. We need to continue to offer good food choices for everybody.

Thankfully, children in our neighborhoods do not currently need to see masked men with guns lurking around their school yards like the kids experience in big cities. However, they are required to practice active shooter drills and lock downs and prepare for dreadful circumstances. Staying alive should not be in little kids’ school curriculums. No one, at any age, should have these concerns.

Due process is no longer the law of the land. Old TV police shows had cops reading the Miranda Rights to suspects. Criminals historically receive due process benefits. Today, mass murderers, extortionists, pedophiles and the like receive due process. Our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and employees who are racially profiled do not receive the same “fair treatment and procedures” due process benefits.

The Affordable Care Act was passed 15 years ago. It’s time to improve it. Legislators simply need to do two things. 1) Recognize that every person deserves health care and 2) write the law and invest in the future.

Winter is on the way. I just took my insulated coveralls out of the closet so I can join you all at the rallies. We will not tolerate those “intolerable acts.” We will do all we can for all people, for our country, and for our planet.

Rally Poster of the week: “There’s Too Much Stuff To Put On One Poster” Thank you, Ross Braun Macomb, IL
