Reviewer’s Name: Jean Wolf Reviewer’s Occupation: Retired Book Title: Table for Two Book’s Author: Amor Towles Towles’ latest work of fiction consists of six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood, which features one of his favorite characters from Rules of Civility. In each of the six stories, the lives of the characters unfold in similar ways – encounters that lead to choices that will hopefully lead to a better life. Yet, things are rarely that simple. The choices lead to more choices that lead to …. Sometimes not the best circumstances. A man who comes to America with his wife to escape Moscow in the 1920s, a man who develops the ability to forge signatures of famous authors, a man who seeks to make a profit by selling the last piece of a famous painting, a man who is a charmer but comes face to face with his own struggles, the man who accuses a concert goer of illegally recording a concert, and, a man who disappears every afternoon from his apartment. Each story does not just focus on a main character, but also those with whom each character interacts and influences. The novella unfolds in similar ways as the Evelyn Ross leaves New York and lands in Los Angeles, making choices and influencing those that cross her path. Towles writing style and development of the characters provide for an engaging and entertaining read.
