Environmentally Concerned Citizens Explore CEJA, Workforce Development, Global Sustainability Practices

The Environmentally Concerned Citizens of McDonough County and Western Illinois University’s Department of Political Science hosted a program last week exploring the intersection of sustainability, workforce development, and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act.

The discussion was led by Casey LaFrance, a PMI GPM Global Sustainability Champion and professor of political science at Western Illinois University. LaFrance guided participants through the ways that sustainable project management can create community and economic benefits alongside environmental progress.

“This isn’t just about protecting plants and animals,” LaFrance said. “True sustainability is about people, equity, and opportunity. CEJA gives Illinois a chance to connect those ideas in a real and lasting way.”

Drawing from his experience with the Project Management Institute and Green Project Management, LaFrance explained how global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals encourage organizations to consider social and governance impacts as part of every project.

Participants discussed CEJA’s workforce provisions, which aim to expand access to clean energy careers and training across Illinois. The conversation emphasized how local initiatives can align with these goals to prepare residents for emerging opportunities in sustainable industries.

The evening concluded with a visit to the Kindness Develops Knowledge sensory regulation area, a room designed to support neurodivergent individuals through calm sensory experiences and mindfulness activities. The space reflects a broader commitment to inclusion and well-being within community and educational settings.
