MDH Announces New Sports Performance Center, Classes Start Dec. 1

McDonough District Hospital and the award-winning Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation department announced a newly renovated fitness area and new training programs.

The new MDH Sports Performance Center was created inside the department’s North Lafayette Street clinic location.

Adjacent to the physical therapy area, MDH’s Sports Performance Center was built to expand strength conditioning and training opportunities ran by certified professionals. Classes and training sessions will start December 1 and will be held inside the Sports Performance Center.

Director of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Phyllis McLouth, PT, DPT, and Tim Piper, Ed.D, CSCS, designed the space and picked out the training equipment for the new facility.

“This new addition provides the opportunity for individuals to attain a higher level of fitness, performance, and quality of life with the involvement of movement specialists trained in exercise science and physical therapy,” said McLouth. “The area includes the equipment and needed environment for athletes and others to maximize their fitness and performance, whether that be on the field, with the family, or any other physical pursuit.”

An indoor turf track, along with squat and bench press racks, kettlebells, dumbbells, a Jacobs Ladder, treadmills, elliptical machines, and other speed and conditioning equipment are located inside the center.

“Many come to us first to see our therapists so they can rehabilitate from an injury, and now they can take the next step to better fitness. Let us fix what ails you and then our strength and conditioning staff can help you meet your other specific fitness needs. Movement is medicine and MDH can help you move better and feel better,” said Piper.

“If you are looking for a fastpaced workout during your lunch hour you can try our Power Lunch Circuit. If you are looking for more individualized training you can sign up for our Health and Fitness Class or Personal Training. After a series of fitness and functional movement assessments, we can design a training plan for you that meets your specific goals and needs.”

MDH will be offering various classes and Blue Chip Sports Training sessions for individuals ages 11 (6th grade) on up.

“MDH owns the entire building and that open space was only being used for storage. When we hired Tim (Piper), he and Phyllis (McLouth) began developing a plan to turn that area into a first-class training center,” said Patrick Osterman, Vice President of Business Strategy. “Both Tim and Phyllis have extensive backgrounds and exceptional reputations in weightlifting and strength training, both as individuals and as coaches. Whether you’re an adult looking for a unique and personalized fitness training program or youth wanting to get bigger, faster, and stronger for sports, we will have the program for you.”
