It is with great sadness that I, Eric R. Jameson, Coroner of McDonough County, announce the forced resignation of Deputy Coroner Dave Burnham.
This decision was not made by Mr. Burnham or myself. Deputy Burnham has been one of the most dedicated and capable members of the Coroner’s Office for many years. His professionalism, skill, and commitment to serving the citizens of McDonough County have been invaluable.
This resignation was mandated by his other employer, Sheriff Nick Petitgout. Under the Sheriff’s Office union contract, the Sheriff has the authority to determine whether his deputies may hold outside employment. Since my election in 2008, it has been common and accepted practice for deputies from the Sheriff’s Office to also serve as Deputy Coroners, including Petitgout himself, who once held both roles. Until now, there has never been a complaint or conflict regarding this arrangement.
Prior concern raised by Petitgout regarding potential “double dipping” was addressed. To avoid any overlap in compensation, Deputy Burnham was placed on a monthly stipend rather than being paid per call. That matter was resolved fully and transparently.
So, what changed? In practical terms, nothing. Deputy Burnham consistently ensured that his responsibilities as Deputy Coroner never conflict duties at the Sheriff’s Office.
The long-standing practice allowing qualified deputies to serve in both capacities has functioned without issue for years.
The unexpected termination of this arrangement represents not only a disservice to the citizens of McDonough County, but also a personal and political attack directed at me. I have been transparent in my belief that I do not support Petitgout’s re-election bid, and it is difficult to view this action as anything other than retaliatory.
Once again, as many in the community have witnessed, Petitgout is allowing personal feelings to influence official decisions, using his position as Sheriff for self-serving purposes rather than in service to the public he took an oath to protect. This conduct undermines public trust and the collaborative relationships necessary to ensure effective county operations. It is also one of many reasons I cannot in good conscience support his candidacy for re-election.
Regardless of motive, the result remains the same, it’s the residents of McDonough County who ultimately suffer. The Coroner’s Office operates continuously, 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with no holidays or overtime pay. The demands of this work require a dependable and experienced team to ensure uninterrupted service to the public.
Deputy Burnham’s forced resignation diminishes that capacity. His experience, professionalism, and institutional knowledge have been essential to the effective operation of the Coroner’s Office. The removal of such a dedicated public servant weakens the office’s ability to respond promptly and compassionately to the needs of our community.
The McDonough County Coroner’s Office remains steadfast in its mission to serve every family in need with professionalism, integrity, and respect as it has done since 2008. I will continue to carry out my duties with the same commitment to transparency and service that the citizens of this county deserve.
Respectfully, Eric R. Jameson McDonough County Coroner
