Reviewer’s Name: Marilyn Pastorelli Reviewer’s Occupation: Retired Book Title: Illinois in the Civil War Book’s Author: Victor Hicken Victor Hicken, a History Professor at Western Illinois University before his retirement, tells the detailed story of the common soldiers who left home and marched from Illinois to fight and die on Civil War battlefields. This book is the second edition, written in 1966. It contains many personal excerpts from family diaries. and letters written by soldiers and sent home to families. Some of the soldiers were as young as 13 years of age, away from home for the first time. McDonough County was a source of many of the soldiers serving under the army of Ulysses S. Grant as they traveled through the southern states.
