A new mural unveiled Thursday morning at the Thomas C. Carper Amtrak Station in Macomb pays tribute to the courageous freedom seekers who risked everything for liberty.
Created by Western Illinois University Art Professor Emeritus Michael Mahoney, the mural depicts escaping slaves, the men who aided them, and historic landmarks like the Allison and Blazer homes, Quincy sawmill, wagon trails, the Mississippi River railroad tracks, and breaking chains., as he explained to the generous crowd attending the event.
“Together, these everyday people chose to do something extraordinary, risking their lives for the belief that we are all created equal and have a God-given right to freedom,” said Jock Hedblade, executive director of the Macomb Area Convention and Visitors Center.
Hedblade added, “This mural connects our local story to the broader American story — one of hope, resilience, and humanity. History like this often comes from small towns. Today is a celebration of art and community accomplishments.”
