John Hemingway Exhibit Review

Behind the lens of John Hemingway’s camera is not just technical mastery, but a rare gift for seeing and preserving the essence of a moment. His exhibit at the Macomb Arts Center (MAC) welcomes viewers to journey through evocative worlds—sweeping outdoor vistas, awe-inspiring interiors and intimate glimpses of daily life—each frame inviting you to step inside and experience the story as if you were present.

I’ve often heard that my mind works in mysterious ways—hopefully for the better. As I wandered through the exhibit, I found myself drawn to the photographs of churches.

In that moment, I couldn’t help but picture ‘Joliet’ Jake Blues standing at the back of the sanctuary, just as a shaft of light pierces the clouds and illuminates the scene—a cinematic vision of revelation. Yet, while Hemingway has an uncanny ability to capture such breathtaking stillness, he is, as the exhibit’s title suggests, “Still Chasing the Light.” Is it a spiritual moment? In my view, absolutely.

What makes this exhibit truly remarkable is Hemingway’s ability to snap the world as it is—honest, unfiltered, and authentic.

His lens offers a window into environments in all their natural splendor, presenting scenes untouched by the interpretive hand of a painter or sketch artist.

Each photograph is a capsule in time, rendered so vividly that you can almost feel the crisp air, hear the distant sounds and sense the shifting seasons. Through Hemingway’s perspective, every image becomes a doorway; you don’t just look at his photographs— you inhabit them, experiencing the emotion and atmosphere as if you were there. In his work, the eye truly is the beholder, drawing you into moments that linger long after you leave the gallery.

Many of the photographs on display are available for purchase, either as individual prints or beautifully framed pieces. For those interested in owning a piece of Hemingway’s work, inquiries can be made by emailing him at [email protected] or through his website at jlhemingwayphotos.com.

“Still Chasing the Light” will remain on display until Saturday, November 22. Admission is free, with gallery hours every Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Macomb Arts Center is located in the heart of the city at 25 East Side Square.
