McDonough County Genealogical Society 322 West Jefferson Street – Macomb
This early Macomb house was lived in by Ben A. Rigg located ½ block west of Johnson Street. He was a driver for Dr. Holmes of Macomb. The following was written in the 1908 local newspaper.
“Described the Ghost.”
“Dr. Holmes, who with his driver, Ben Rigg, saw the Gooseneck Ghost the other night, confirms the story told by Ben that he saw the light, and as they got to it, it suddenly disappeared. Dr.
Holmes adds more to the story stating that he heard a roaring sound and felt a gust of wind at the back of his head. The light was about five feet from the ground and remained almost steady until it disappeared.
Continuing, he stated that the light was a cigar in the mouth of a pedestrian, whom they met on the road and just as they met him, the man threw away his cigar, causing the light to disappear. The roaring sound was the wind, which was very high, and any person out was bound to feel a gust of wind at the back of his head if he turned in that direction.” The home no long exists – Happy Halloween.
