Zoning Board Okays Variance for Hy-Vee

The Macomb Zoning Board of Appeals voted last Wednesday to approve a variance to allow additional signage at the Hy-Vee Food Store at 1600 and 1602 East Jackson Street.

Community Development Director Miranda Lambert said city regulations allow just two temporary signs, but that Hy-Vee has requested 14. She said the size of the Hy-Vee building could easily accommodate that many. 'We don't feel this would cause any safety concerns,' Lambert said.

Kevin Gronewald, a store department head, presented a letter from the store director indicating the company's position that their signs give customers the best service. Gronewald said the signs would be up periodically, usually advertising sales.

Zoning Board Chairman Ron Runser noted that the development offered no negative findings of fact in its analysis of the variance request.
