Reviewer’s Name: Jamie Lane Reviewer’s Occupation: Nurse Book Title: The Beautiful Mystery Book’s Author: Louise Penny No outsiders have ever been admitted to the monastery of Saint Gilbert Entreles- Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen monks live in peace and prayer. However, when one of the monks is found dead in the garden, the murder must be investigated by Chief Inspector Gamache and his assistant Beauvoir. I loved the beautiful setting for this book, and all of the quiet one-to-one interviews with each of the 23 monks, giving great depth to life in the monastery, and slowly revealing what these men have in common and what conflicts lie below the veneer of an ideal life. It is as much a psychological analysis of mankind as it is a murder mystery.
This is book # 8 of 20 in the series about Armand Gamache.
I like his quiet, thoughtful approach to tracking down the guilty. He teaches his young agents to be willing to say I don’t know, I am sorry, I was wrong, I need help. In other words, to keep their humility and humanity. It is good advice for us all.
