SRC Offers West-Central Illinois’ Legacy in Civil Rights Course

The Spoon River College Office of Community Outreach is excited to offer a course called West-Central Illinois’ Leadership Legacy in Civil Rights on Tuesday, November 11 from 6:00-8:00pm.

Two men from central Illinois were integral to the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965: Sen. Everett Dirksen of Pekin and the Rev. C.T.

Vivian of Macomb. One led as a lawmaker, the other as an activist. We'll discuss how their experiences growing up in this region helped set them on their respective paths. We'll also examine Dirksen's challenges in crafting the bipartisan legislation and Vivian's work standing up to segregation on the front lines as he worked and marched alongside the Rev.

Martin Luther King Jr.

The class will take place at the SRC Macomb Community Outreach Center located at 2500 E. Jackson Street in Macomb. There is a $10 course fee to attend and pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call Spoon River College at 309-833-6031 or register online at https://src.augusoft.net.
