The 2025 season ended for the Macomb High boys soccer team on Oct. 17 as it lost to Canton 1-0 in extra time at the Ingersoll Middle School Field in Canton.
The match against the Little Giants was an Illinois High School Association Class 1A Regional opening-round contest with Macomb entering as the No. 9 sub-sectional seed, while Canton was seeded eighth.
MHS scored a goal in regulation, but it was negated when the Bombers had a player offside.
Scoreless through regulation, Canton grabbed the lead in the first overtime as Behr Munton scored with Zekiah Sale credited with the assist.
That goal would stand up as Macomb saw its season end with a final record of 2-17.
The two teams had squared off in the regular season with the Little Giants posting a 3-1 win at Canton on Sept. 8.
It was also the third straight season that the two teams met in the opening round of regional play.
A year ago, the two teams met in the regular season and in regional play.
Canton won the regular season match 2-1, but the Bombers edged the Little Giants 2-1 in the regional rematch.
Two years ago, the Bombers swept the Little Giants, winning the regular season contest 3-1 before posting a 5-2 over Canton in regional play.
Regional semifinal contests were played at Moline on Tuesday.
Top-seeded Rock Island Alleman blanked Canton 4-0 before No. 5 seed Illini Bluffs/ Farmington defeated No. 4 seed Abingdon- Avon 3-1.
Canton finished the season with a final record of 5-14, while A-Town wrapped up its season with a final record of 13-7-2.
Rock Island Alleman (15-5-1) and Illini Bluffs/Farmington (12-5-3) will play for the regional title in Moline Saturday evening.
The victor advances to sectional play at Chillicothe that begins on Oct. 28.
The 4:30 p.m. semifinal will have either Rock Island Alleman (15-5-1) and Illini Bluffs/Farmington (12-5-3) playing either No. 2 seed Bloomington Central Catholic (9-10-3) or No. 3 seed Roanoke-Benson/ Eureka (12-7-2).
The 6:30 p.m. semifinal will have topseeded Peoria Christian (19-5-2) or No. 5 seed Bloomington Cornerstone Christian Academy (8-14-1) facing either No. 2 seed Beardstown H.S. (13-5-3) or No. 3 seed Quincy Notre Dame (4-15-3).
The sectional title match is scheduled for Nov. 1 at noon in Chillicothe.
The sectional champion advances to Class 1A supersectional play on Nov. 3 at Mendota.
