The nation's largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them is getting ready to grow by one more chapter in Illinois thanks to the work of a local woman.
PFLAG, which was created in 1973 when a mother's letter sparked a movement, has been providing a place for LGBTQ+ people, families, and allies to come together in pursuit of justice and affirmation—and always leading with love. Emily Sutton, a Macombarea attorney and mother of a bisexual child, recently posted an inquiry to assess the interest in forming a Macomb-area PFLAG organization. According to the PFLAG.org, since its earliest days, PFLAG has been the connector for LGBTQ+ people with community, parents with resources and allies with tools, bolstering the LGBTQ+ movement with strength, power and love. This resonates with Sutton, who is looking to form a local chapter for the family members and friends of loved ones (and friends) who identify as LGBTQ+ to provide awareness and most all, serve as a source of support.
'PFLAG's mission and vision is to create a caring, just and affirming world for LGBTA+ people and those who love them,' Sutton explained. 'This is something I believe strongly in, and I know there are several others in our community who do so as well.'
Prior to becoming an official chapter under the organization's national umbrella, an organizing team must be established. Sutton will host another interest meeting in the near future via Zoom to allow more people to get involved in establishing a Macomb chapter.
To join the next interest meeting, please email Sutton at [email protected]. When a date is set, an information will be sent to those who register with the meeting date, time and link.
