No Criminal Charges Against Chief Deputy for Negligent Discharge of AR-15 in School Parking Lot

No charges will be filed against McDonough County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Adam Cremer for the negligent discharge of an AR-15 in the parking lot of McArthur School of Macomb on Oct. 3.

“A determination has been made that no criminal charges will be filed in this case,” Sheriff Nick Petitgout said in a released statement Thursday morning. "The McDonough County State’s Attorney originally held the case, but to stay unbiased they passed the case to an independent agency to review the case, the State Appellate Prosecutors Office who made the final call."

Cremer is currently on unpaid leave. Petitgout indicated that an internal review of the incident is ongoing.

“We continue to train our staff on the incident to ensure it never happens again,” said Petitgout, adding that the sheriff’s office will continue to provide updates "as appropriate while maintaining the integrity of the ongoing review process."

According to initial reports, the assault rifle was fired while Cremer unloaded a table from the back seat of his vechicle for a cookout at the school, where homecoming festivities were being held. The weapon was loaded with the safety off.

There were no injuries.
