The Macomb High girls golf team wrapped up a historic season this week in the Illinois High School Association Class 1A State Finals at Decatur.
The Bombers posted a team score of 377, finishing 10th of 12 teams following the opening round.
After the first day of competition, the field is reduced to the top eight teams (and ties) and the top 40 individuals (and ties) not on the top eight teams.
Senior Sophie Wilson led the Bombers with an 89 on the par 72, 5,392 yard layout at Red Tail Run Golf Course.
Wilson’s score allowed her to be the first Macomb individual to advance to Round 2 of state tournament play since Lily Vardaman in 2021.
Wilson eventually finished 61st out of 88 golfers on the second day with a final score of 180 (89-91).
Other scores for the Bombers included Brenlee Tibbitts (94), Taylor Mann (97), Aubrey Holthaus (97), Reese Watson (98) and Mullen Butcher (116).
Sarah Hyten of Glen Carbon Father McGivney claimed the individual title with a 146 (75-71), finishing one stroke ahead of Columbia’s Avery Arendell (76-71-147) In the team competition, Mt. Carmel took home top honors with a score of 316-308-624.
Quincy Notre Dame was seconds (329-320-649), followed by Breese Central (332-325-657), Breese Mater Dei (357-342-699), Rockford Lutheran (358-345-703), Monmouth United (362-345-707), Effingham St. Anthony (356-353-709) and Downs Tri-Valley (358-369-727).
Teams missing the cut for the second day were Monticello (365), MHS (377), Byron (382) and Aurora Rosary (396).
It was the first state appearance for Macomb as a team since 2019 and the seventh overall in program history.
