Mayor Declares Oct. 8 ‘Jerry Tyson Day’ in Honor of Barber’s 70 Years

Macomb’s Mayor Inman proclaimed October 8, 2025, as Jerry Tyson Day, celebrating the longtime barber’s seven decades of dedication to his craft and community.

Born and raised in Rushville, Illinois, Jerry Tyson found his calling in barbering soon after high school. Under the guidance of his uncle and alongside his brother Harold, he earned his barber’s license in October 1955. Jerry spent the next 27 years perfecting his skills and building a reputation as a personable and skilled barber before moving to Macomb.

In 1982, Jerry opened his own barber shop in Macomb, which quickly became more than just a place for haircuts. For 43 years, his shop has served as a unique gathering spot—part library, part lounge—reflecting Jerry’s warm personality and love of conversation. Customers from across the nation have traveled to sit in Jerry’s chair, drawn not only by his expert cuts but also by the humor, wisdom, and welcoming spirit he offers.

Jerry’s contributions extend beyond barbering. He helped establish the Wine Tasting fundraisers at Western Illinois University and shared his expertise through a local newspaper wine column, becoming a trusted voice in the community’s cultural life.

Through 70 years of craftsmanship and civic involvement, Jerry Tyson has become a pillar of Macomb, inspiring generations with his pride, friendship, and dedication.
