Images of the Past

Joseph Evermost Wyne was a native of Kentucky; born July 13, 1820, being the son of B.F. and Mary Anne Doyle Wyne, the former was a native of New Jersey, and Mary Anne from Ireland. Joseph was left an orphan when a small boy and in April 1834, with the family of Joseph McCrosky came to Illinois and settled in the northern part of Industry township.

He worked for about 4 years in Industry township, then moved to Macomb, where he commenced a mercantile life as clerk in the store of N. P. Tinsley for eight years. He then worked under the firm name of Wyne & Lawson a general store until 1848 at which time he bought out Mr. Lawson and continued in the business until 1856.

In 1861 he was appointed Postmaster of Macomb receiving his commission from President Lincoln.

He built this brick home in 1854 or 1855 on East Carroll Street. In 1845 Joseph E. married Clarinda Hays, daughter of Dr. Charles Hays of Macomb. They had ten children, eight whom were still living upon his death in 1904. This home still stands today.
