Biennial Faculty and Freshmen & Transfer exhibitions

It’s true what Henry Adams once said: “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Nowhere is that ripple more vividly felt than at the Western Illinois University Art Gallery’s newest exhibit, “Biennial Faculty Exhibition,” where the gallery transforms into a living canvas of inspiration.

Step inside and witness a creative dialogue unfolding— one where faculty artists ignite sparks in their students, and in turn, draw fresh colors and contours from the visions of those they teach. Here, teaching becomes an art form itself, a mutual exchange where professors echo, reinterpret, and even mimic the daring spirit seen in student works. In this exhibit, inspiration is a two-way current: professors shape, uplift, and are in turn, profoundly shaped by the artistry and imagination of their students.

Meanwhile, in Garwood Hall, the creative symphony continues. The newest cohort of first-year students absorbs the wisdom of their professors, then boldly splashes their own visions across blank canvases in the “Freshmen and Transfer” exhibition on the third floor. Here, each stroke is a response, a note in an ongoing artistic conversation that spills well beyond the walls of the University Art Gallery. The dialogue between teacher and student becomes a kinetic force, urging all who witness it to dream, to dare, and perhaps to set the gears of the art world spinning in an exciting and hopeful new direction.

If you wish to witness where the poetic exchange of ideas begins—where words become brushstrokes and dialogue blossoms into legacies spanning generations, then visit the “Biennial Faculty Exhibition” at the University Art Gallery.

This exhibit will remain on display until Friday, October 24. Some of these items are available to purchase upon request.

The University Art Gallery (located at 1 University Circle in Macomb) is open from 9 a.m. to noon, then 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free and open to the public.
