Sit and stay for an afternoon designed for current, new and prospective dog owners.
Beginning at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, the Humane Society of McDonough County will host the inaugural 'Dog Care Educational Seminar' at Western Illinois University's Student Recreation Center. Open free to the public, the event will run until 5 p.m.
Featured presenters include Allie Fekete of Nerdy Dog Training from Hannibal, MO, 'Consideration When Bringing a New Dog Home & Crate Training,' from 1-2 p.m.; Macomb K-9 Police Officer Aric Cremer and Jax, 'Working Dog Breeds' and K-9 demonstration, from 2-3 p.m.; Certified Canine Massage Therapist Sarah Zinger of Black Dog Canine Massage from Davenport, IA, 'Canine First Aid & Planning,' from 3-4 p.m., and Brian Wilson of Wilson's Dog Training from Cuba, 'Leash Training & Respecting Dogs in Public Spaces.'
Vendor booths, which will be set up from 12:30-5 p.m., include Pet Supply Plus of Macomb, Nerdy Dog Training, Black Dog Canine Massage, Wilson's Dog Training, ePITome Dog Rescue of Macomb, Humane Society of McDonough County and McDonough County Animal Shelter, Brown County Rescue and Hearts of Hancock. Event sponsors include Jackie and Dave Thompson of Macomb and Car Care Center of Macomb.
'We really want people to be aware of the responsibilities of owning a dog and being a responsible pet owner,' Humane Society Volunteer and owner of Gossel's Dog House Lars Gossel shared. 'There are so many wonderful animals in need of good homes, and we want to educate people about the care, financial obligations and more when it comes to having a pet.'
