Loaves & Fishes Announces Temporary Closure
Due to lack of funds, Loaves & Fishes of Macomb will be forced to close its doors temporarily, effective Sept. 24.
'It is with a heavy heart that we announce another temporary closure of Loaves and Fishes,' the Loaves & Fishes Board stated. 'As we've been serving an average of 435 families monthly and spending over $15,000/ month, we will have exhausted our funds this month.'
Since the start of 2025, more than 3,905 households were served and close to $123,000 in food vouchers were distributed by Loaves & Fishes of Macomb. According to board members, the need has been far exceeding the organization's resources.
'We are terribly sorry for the impact this temporary closure will cause our clients,' the board added.
Loaves & Fishes began as a food pantry in 1993 as a collaborative venture between 12 area churches. Following a closure from 2020-2022, the organization re-opened in the Prairieview Townhomes Community Center and has provided grocery vouchers once a month that could be used at Hy-Vee and Jackson Street Market in Macomb and the Bushnell Market.

'What has set us apart over the years is that we provided vouchers which gave individuals a choice and empowered them to get what they need that might not be provided elsewhere,' Board Member Cheryl McGowan said. 'We've tried to eliminate roadblocks that might exist with traditional benefits assistance.'
