The life and service of Major Gen. Alexander Macomb was recognized Sept. 20 in Washington, D.C., with current Mayor Mike Inman and former Mayor Tom Carper in attendance. Macomb, who was the commanding general of the United States Army from 1828-1841 and the City of Macomb's namesake, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for service during the War of 1812. Macomb's remains were reinterred Sept. 19 during special private ceremony with the family at the Congressional Cemetery. The Sept. 20 ceremony served to honor Macomb's legacy, along with the thousands of veterans interred at Congressional Cemetery, men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps whose service has safeguarded the nation for more than two centuries.
