The Bushnell-Prairie City District 170 capital projects fund currently holds over $2.2 million, fueled by a 1% sales tax that generates about $350,000 annually. Yet, with no active projects underway, Board President John McCleery challenged members at Monday’s meeting to propose ideas for using the available funds.
“There’s a lot of money sitting there that could make a real difference in our school,” McCleery said. “I know it might show as a budget hit, but we have parking lots that need resurfacing. It would cost about $500,000 to blacktop and stripe both the junior and senior high school lots.”
Board members quickly pointed out the lack of sufficient handicapped parking spaces, highlighting a specific need.
“If we’re not going to use the money we’re getting from the sales tax, then what’s the point?” McCleery asked. He encouraged the board to brainstorm ideas immediately, suggesting smaller projects like installing handrails in the gymnasium, which he estimated at around $20,000.
“I want everyone to come back next month with suggestions on how we can improve the school grounds and facilities,” McCleery added. The capital projects fund is designated for construction and facility upgrades.
“So far, we’re only planning to spend $90,000 out of the $2.2 million,” he said. “I’ve challenged the board and Superintendent Robert Gound to start submitting ideas to put this money to good use.”
