Habitat for Humanity Seeks Applications for Home Ownership

The McDonough County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications from qualified buyers for a home located in Macomb. The ranch home is approximately 1,280 square feet, and includes three bedrooms and one and one-half bathrooms.

Applications can be obtained in person at the local Habitat for Humanity office, 1212 W. Calhoun St., located inside Wesley United Methodist Church. The application deadline is Oct. 31, 2025 and completed applications should be mailed or delivered to the Habitat office.

Habitat families are selected based upon the following criteria:

• The applicant’s level of need

• Their willingness to partner with Habitat

• The ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan. Applicants must be able to show they have a stable income, and a need for permanent housing in the community.

Habitat’s homebuyers are also required to invest their own labor, or sweat equity, working with Habitat volunteers to improve the property. Habitat for Humanity follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. The organization does require that applicants live within McDonough County, or have employment within McDonough County and a desire to move into the county on a permanent basis.

Additionally, the McDonough County Habitat for Humanity chapter is seeking additional board members from our community. Board members generally commit to a three-year term and attend monthly meetings, as well as committee meetings and work events. Prospective board members should be committed to the vision of Habitat for Humanity in our community, and be willing to volunteer time and talent to the organization and its mission. Our Board is looking for volunteers that can utilize their professional experiences or interests in areas including finance, community relations, fundraising or construction.

Anyone interested in becoming a board member, or who would like more information about the chapter, should contact Patricia Walton at [email protected] or Alice Ohrtmann at amohrtmann@ gmail.com. The Board routinely meets the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at Macomb City Hall, in the 2nd Floor meeting room.
